Framed poster -BLACK Magic
The term "black magic" is often defined as the invocation of malevolent spirits for nefarious purposes. However, that's not the kind of magic I intend to convey in this artwork. Instead, I am celebrating the extraordinary qualities and inherent brilliance of Black individuals and Black culture. As I created this piece, I found myself immersed in memories of Soul Train, the vibrant rhythms of '80s R&B, and the bold statement hairstyles that characterized the era. I fondly recall the joy of Saturdays spent as a young Black child, reveling in the beauty of my identity. There is something profoundly special about us, something that feels almost magical yet is difficult to articulate. For centuries, we have demonstrated an incredible resilience, crafting pathways where none seemed to exist. Our rich culture has flourished in defiance of the shadows cast by slavery, Jim Crow, and the ongoing challenges of systemic racism.
I firmly believe we embody magic in every sense of the word.
Indeed, it is BLACK magic.
