  • This work is not intended to suggest that old‑school affection or chivalry within the Black community is rare or exceptional. Good love exists. Good partners exist. The kind of romantic care that feels familiar, nourishing, and comforting—like a home‑cooked meal or the foods tied to our fondest memories—did not vanish with earlier generations. It remains present and deeply rooted. What deserves emphasis is what has endured. No individual or relationship is without flaws, yet our community has consistently sustained love and devotion despite the hardships imposed upon us. Even in eras when the United States sought to delegitimize Black marriages and criminalize Black intimacy, Black people continued to choose one another. This work foregrounds that persistence: the continuity of affection, the resilience of partnership, and the enduring presence of Black love.

The depiction of a Black gentleman’s hair gently caressed by a Black woman’s hand embodies the soothing intimacy of genuine love. The reference to “Corn Muffin” evokes not only the comfort and warmth of the food itself but also the familiar, nourishing qualities of romantic connection. The inclusion of the hot sauce label serves as a metaphor for the boldness and resilience inherent in sustaining love within our community despite persistent societal challenges.
