Being a black person comes with both challenges and triumphs. Our lives reflect the progress made through civil rights, yet the shadows of racial discrimination and systemic oppression still loom. Microaggressions are a contemporary, subtle reminder of the realities we face, underscoring how race profoundly shapes the black experience.

This artwork tells a story that symbolizes our painful history and present. There is a historical account of enslaved Black individuals being bought and sold. Beneath that statement, a vintage alcohol advertisement featuring a Black couple reflects a complex reality that persists today. Despite our pride and strength, we encounter forces that exploit us, such as the increased availability of alcohol in poorer, predominantly black neighborhoods. The abstract representation of a rainbow embodies hope and the promise of brighter days following every storm. It serves as a reminder for us to remain resilient, echoing Talib Kweli’s sentiment in "Beautiful Struggle," that "The revolution is inside of you."

    We must persevere.
