Framed poster -Strange Fruit: Vivian
On June 24, 1969, Vivian Strong, a 14-year-old African American girl, was killed in Omaha, Nebraska, when a white police officer shot her without warning. The police officer's name was James Loder.
Responding to a reported break-in of a unit at the Logan Fontenelle Housing Projects, Loder and his partner went inside to investigate.
Vivian was at a party at an empty unit in the projects. When the police showed up, Vivian and some other partygoers fled through the back door.
Seeing a group of young people scatter and run out the back door, Officer Loder drew his weapon. According to the youth, he was indiscriminate, not telling anyone to stop, freeze, or anything. Instead, he just fired his gun one time.
Vivian was shot at the base of the skull as she ran and died immediately.
Loder was acquitted of manslaughter by an all-white jury.
He served two more years on the Omaha police force.
