  • Just as containment, punishment, ignorance, and discrimination are political acts, so too is the unrestrained joy and freedom expressed by Black people.

The control of Black expression has been a persistent force throughout history, from the days of slavery and Jim Crow to the present. This is why joy and resistance are inseparable. In defiance of the omnipresent and intrusive legacy of oppression, we embrace a rebellious joy. When society instructs us to “be quiet,” labeling us as “too loud” or “too different,” our refusal to comply and our decision to revel in joy become powerful acts of resistance against those who seek to strip it away.

This ethos inspired my choice of bold colors and vivid imagery in this artwork. I wanted to illustrate that the Black experience encompasses much more than struggle and obstacles; we are a dynamic and spirited people. We are vibrant. We are Black. We are proud. The cow eye serves as an abstract representation of how we perceive the world—anchored in steadfastness and optimism, even amidst adversity. The background evokes an indescribable comfort that is both familiar and enduring. The logo represents resilience, symbolizing our ability to overcome challenges, much like how baking soda helps dough rise and can also neutralize and heal.
