  • And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see... Guided by my heritage of a love of beauty and a respect for strength- in search of my mother's garden, I found my own. -Alice Walker

As I immersed myself in creating this artwork, the powerful quote from Alice Walker echoed in my thoughts and sparked a deep exploration of our heritage and the legacy of Black women who paved the way for us. I envisioned those remarkable women who, often without the luxury of time, resources, or societal support, dreamed big but had their canvases limited to the walls of their homes and their children's hearts. Their legacy wasn't etched in marble but lived on through their children—each one a living testament to their wisdom and stories.

This reflection prompted me to honor the incredible strength and artistry passed down through generations—from cherished tales shared around the kitchen table to the compelling narratives that have shaped our very identities. In this journey, I uncovered not just our history, but also the profound self-discovery that came with it.

In this piece, green hues represent life, growth, and a sense of tranquility. The red tulip embodies courage, resilience, and strength—a beautiful reminder of the battles fought and overcome. The collaged image of a Black woman intertwines our past and present, celebrating the intricate tapestry of our flaws, beauty, and shared humanity. The retro background, infused with nostalgia and emotional warmth is reminiscent of the uncomplicated joys found in the simplest ingredients like sugar and puffed wheat, reminding us of the comfort and connection to our roots that ground us.
