  • This work is not intended to suggest that old‑school affection or chivalry within the Black community is rare or exceptional. Good love exists. Good partners exist. The kind of romantic care that feels familiar, nourishing, and comforting—like a home‑cooked meal or the foods tied to our fondest memories—did not vanish with earlier generations. It remains present and deeply rooted. What deserves emphasis is what has endured. No individual or relationship is without flaws, yet our community has consistently sustained love and devotion despite the hardships imposed upon us. Even in eras when the United States sought to delegitimize Black marriages and criminalize Black intimacy, Black people continued to choose one another. This work foregrounds that persistence: the continuity of affection, the resilience of partnership, and the enduring presence of Black love.

The retro image of a Black man and a natural hair product evokes a sense of suaveness, confidence, and self‑possessed pride in the art of romancing. The comic‑inspired graphic form operates as a visual exclamation point, asserting presence through its unconventional shape. The sweet cornbread label serves as a metaphor for the warmth, sweetness, and comforting intimacy associated with good lovin’.
