The way these images sit together reminded me of Imaginary Playmates by René & Angela, even though I can’t pinpoint the exact reason. Maybe it’s the contrast between the Black woman styled like a Playboy bunny and the brotha in a sharp, tailored suit. Then there’s that slice of cornbread with butter and honey—something warm, sweet, and indulgent that feels like pleasure in its simplest form.
For me, the collage hints at the softer, more playful sides of Black life. Being Black isn’t only about navigating struggle or pushing through obstacles. We also love, lust, crush, and fantasize. We hold space for sweetness and desire just like anyone else, and this work leans into that truth.
