Poster -The Message: We Still Can't Breathe
Air might be regarded as a universal entity that is everywhere present, but we must distinguish among different kinds of airs. There is metaphysical air that conjures up socio-culturally situated notions of spirits, religious beliefs, vitalism and other conceptions. There is cosmic or ecological air that is linked to climate change and environmental pollution. There is biological air that relates to personal health and various pathologies. Then there is social air that revolves around political and socio-economic conditions of life, relating to questions of value opposites that include freedom and bondage or incarceration, democratic egalitarianism and oppressive totalitarianism. Although these different conceptions of air appear to function in different ways, they do overlap and connect as well as loop into each other, as a way of living and dying. For instance, polluted air could cause certain pathologies that affect breathing, just as poverty and disadvantages could be read not only as material deprivation but suffocation through social air, which in turn leads not only to social but also actual physical death.
