The Swahili term "pamoja" signifies collective identity, togetherness, and shared presence. Its inclusion in this collage was essential. Togetherness is a defining characteristic within Black communities, extending beyond romantic relationships to encompass community. I intended to express the distinctive, unifying love that persists among us, regardless of location or era.
In this composition, the comic-inspired graphic form functions as an exclamation point, despite its unconventional shape. The identical gas masks worn by the man and the woman symbolize shared challenges, the necessity for protection within an imperfect society, and the recognition of fundamental similarities across gender.
Although this collage remains untitled, I encourage you to engage with it through your perspectives and uncover personal narratives within this work.
