Despite being agnostic, I felt compelled to create this collage. It functions as an abstract “portrait” of Jesus refracted through the lens of the Black experience. Within Christian theology, Jesus is understood as one who carried human suffering while also embodying and multiplying joy. That duality resonates deeply within Black cultural memory.
Drawing from the long‑held belief within much of the Black community that Jesus was Black, I merged the images of a Black man and a Black woman; figures who, across history and into the present, have known both profound pain and profound joy. Their combined presence becomes a symbolic reconstruction of Jesus, one rooted not in literal likeness but in the emotional, spiritual, and historical realities of Black life.
