As I delved into the creation of this artwork, I found myself reflecting on the profound wisdom of Shamans and African healers. I became captivated by the rich tapestry of healing traditions that span the African continent and its diaspora, each woven with unique practices and rituals. My thoughts danced through the realms of spiritual healing, diverse healing methods, divination, and sacred ceremonies.
In crafting this piece, I consciously set aside the notion of gender, as I believe that the essence of spirituality and healing transcends such boundaries; hence, the healer depicted in my collage embodies an androgynous form. I perceive the body as a vessel for the soul, a conduit for individual power. The inclusion of a chicken bone earring serves as a potent symbol of ancestral reverence, divination, and the art of spell casting. The television antenna crowns this healer, representing the vital exchange of messages between the living and the spirits of our ancestors.
I created this artwork as a tribute to spiritual traditions and the enduring strength of our ancestors. Throughout the creative process, I felt their power and presence guiding me. I wanted to honor our roots, recognizing those who paved the way and those who passionately preserve our culture and traditions.
