Framed poster -A Man Like Him
Pepper LaBeija’s story, as depicted in the documentary Paris Is Burning, helped anchor the work’s emotional and cultural orientation. I also reflected on Black men who resist traditional masculinity and the quiet pressures they face in spaces that claim liberation yet struggle to hold gender‑nonconforming identities with ease.
Pepper identified as male but preferred feminine pronouns and a feminine presentation in ballroom performance. Legend even suggests that he had breast implants. Men like Pepper LaBeija do not break the definition of “man.” They break the illusion that there was ever only one definition.
With the intention of pushing against rigid constructions of manhood, I collaged the face of a Black man who appears confident and unbothered. The phrase A Natural Explosion is my poetic way of naming this moment: a time when men like Pepper LaBeija are increasingly visible, and their presence is understood not as an anomaly but as something organic, rooted, and undeniably real.
