  • This artwork serves as my abstract rebellion against a deeply entrenched and ignorant racist trope that mainstream media has wielded to dehumanize and shame Black individuals.

While the precise origins of the racist chicken trope remain elusive, narratives from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, combined with visual imagery and various artifacts from the twentieth century, reveal a persistent racial stereotype that continues to afflict us. Chicken has always been a universal sustenance, but false associations have negatively affected Black people.

In this work, I strived to craft a narrative grounded in truth. Once again, I transformed the chicken bone into an earring to symbolize a vital link between the living and the spiritual realm, embodying profound reverence for our ancestors and spirit guides. The collaged image of a Black woman's face stands as a powerful testament to unwavering pride and the pursuit of truth. Finally, the inclusion of a vintage grocery store ad serves as my unambiguous statement that we must never allow a racist trope to govern our attitudes or actions.
