Framed poster -Her Rightful Place
This artwork embodies my abstract interpretation of a black woman's rightful place in society. It serves as a poignant commentary on the journey of black women as they navigate a landscape marred by racism, discrimination, and gender marginalization, drawing contrasts between past and present. The weight of society’s unrealistic expectations, entrenched power imbalances, and systemic oppression undermines their autonomy and humanity, effectively denying them the status they rightfully deserve.
In this piece, the antenna symbolizes the act of sending, receiving, and communicating the voices of black women—a testament to their resilience amid the often flawed and biased responses that society generates. The chicken bone, rendered as an earring, pays homage to their ancestors and spiritual guides, serving as a reminder of deep-rooted connections. The collaged body captures the essence of the societal status that Black women are entitled to, affirming their rightful place in the narrative of humanity.
