Framed poster -It Is Not Finished
This artwork is not intended to disrespect Jesus or undermine faith. It is a creative abstraction that places Black women in a powerful, self‑affirming light.
The collage takes the biblical verse John 19:30, “It is finished,” as a starting point to move in the opposite direction. I didn’t want to reenact sacrifice or suggest that Black women shoulder humanity’s sins. This work is intended to insist that her resilience is not finished. Her becoming is not finished. Her power to rise, rebuild, and redefine herself remains inexhaustible.
I chose a favorite image of a Black woman’s calm, content face to replace Jesus’ face as an act of reclamation, an insistence on centering Black women as whole, dignified, and unbroken. The word bergamot evokes protection, joy, and personal power. The word conditioner introduces softness, a deliberate counterpoint to the harsh realities of racism and misogyny.
Together, these elements form an abstract assertion of strength. Regardless of the obstacles imposed by society, a Black woman’s tenacity, clarity of self, and command of her own narrative will remain intact.
