Framed poster -Savior: In Living Color
This artwork is my abstract interpretation of the Black Woman Savior trope, an erroneous ideology rooted in the racialization, control, and oppression of Black women, burdening them with society’s ills without complaint or recognition. Black women are persistently expected to show up, even when it means fighting for the interests of others while no one advocates for their own.
In this piece, the collaged image of the Black woman walks toward a dangerous situation she did not create, symbolized by the house fire. The bucket she carries conveys the inadequate resources society provides, while the antenna signifies the communication between Black women and an imperfect society they are called to save, only for it to continue operating in ways that erase their humanity.
If you’re familiar with the Savior collage series, you’ll notice that I chose to work with realistic, natural colors in this piece. That shift is intentional. I want the message to register with the immediacy of something witnessed—an image that feels emotionally present rather than imagined.
