  • Minimizing, sanitizing, or outright dismissing the existence of racism does not erase it; rather, it serves to reinforce its insidious grip. Racism is so deeply ingrained in U.S. society and minds that it is nearly impossible to escape.

Let there be no doubt: Black individuals are facing the myriad challenges and injustices that racism instills. While our lives are not solely defined by negativity and sorrow, we are undeniably affected by systemic racism, a legacy rooted in slavery. We must remain vigilant, for race continues to shape our navigation through society. The normalization of the marginalization of Black people across various systems and institutions in the United States endures, influencing our lives today.

In this artwork, I chose to depict a Black figure not as a representation of gender, but as an abstract reflection of our shared identity. The crown and earring, crafted from collaged images of chicken bones, invoke African traditions and spirituality where bones are used to bridge the gap to our ancestors and spiritual guides. It is not merely an artistic choice; it is an expression of the crucial connection with our forebears as we engage in the ongoing spiritual warfare and the fight for our rightful place in the human tapestry. In this image, you will find a transparent depiction of a white porcelain doll head positioned on the figure’s forehead, symbolizing the ever-present awareness of white fragility and supremacy that we must navigate.
