Framed poster -The Sum of Us
I created this image not to depict a man or woman, but rather as an abstract reflection of our collective identity. Despite the myriad challenges we face as Black individuals navigating this world, we remain a proud and resilient people. Our pride and resilience serve as acts of resistance and survival. There exists an incredible strength within us, a strength we must uphold to endure the generational burdens borne from racism. In this artwork, I have collaged a crown made from images of chicken bones. In various African traditions, these bones are believed to serve as conduits to connect with ancestors and spirits. Through this work, I aimed to express our positive manifestations toward these ancestors and spiritual guides. As previously mentioned, the collaged figure is not meant to represent a man or woman; it embodies the mirrored essence of us all. The body itself originates from a photo of a Black Union soldier from the Civil War, symbolizing our ongoing spiritual warfare and our relentless fight for our rightful place in humanity.
The challenges we face extend beyond just political, social, and economic issues. They have a profound impact on our spiritual existence. We are warriors who experience the spectrum of life—joys intertwined with sorrow, victories mingled with defeats, healing interspersed with wounds. And through it all, we persist and push forward with unwavering determination.
That, in its entirety, encapsulates who we are.
