Happy Warrior

This collage draws from pre‑colonial African understandings of gender, where identity was shaped through social, spiritual, and energetic frameworks rather than restricted to anatomical categories. Before the imposition of European gender binaries in the 19th and 20th centuries, many African societies recognized fluidity, multiplicity, and context as central to how gender operated.

Military and spiritual leadership often overlapped, and gender variance was embedded within those roles. Across the continent, social responsibilities were not always tied to physical anatomy; crossing or blending gendered expectations was a recognized part of communal life, particularly within warrior traditions.

By layering vintage portraiture with a Black male face and traditional African adornment, Happy Warrior foregrounds this expansive history. The work honors cultures that held space for complex expressions of identity long before Western norms attempted to narrow them. It celebrates ancestral strength, dignity, and joy; qualities embodied by those who protected and guided their communities.
