Upon completing this artwork, the word "church" resonated deeply within me. The hat featured in my work evokes the elegant headpieces traditionally adorned by Black women in their Sunday best. Also, it stems from the spiritual connotations associated with the chicken in African cultures. In many of these traditions, chickens serve as vital offerings in rituals to honor deities, spirits, and ancestors, seeking blessings, guidance, or atonement. The chicken bone fashioned into an earring symbolizes a medium of communication between the living and the spiritual realm, embodying a deep reverence for our ancestors and spirit guides.
Furthermore, I contemplate the resilience of enslaved Black individuals, who adeptly wove their African spiritual heritage via the forced conversion to Christianity. Their quest for emotional healing prompted them to discover common threads between their ancestral beliefs and Christianity, such as the existence of a Supreme Being and the empowering notion of overcoming adversity through faith and prayer.
