  • This artwork interrogates the racialized expectations placed upon Black girls, particularly the presumption that they possess heightened resilience or diminished vulnerability. These biases influence institutional behavior, frequently resulting in inadequate support or punitive intervention. The piece calls attention to the structural consequences of these misperceptions and the urgent need to restore their rightful claim to protection and care.

In the composition, the Black girls carry heavy containers strapped to their heads, symbolizing the disproportionate burdens they are expected to bear. The antennas signify the communication between Black girls and an imperfect society. The flowing fire from the fuel tank represents the societal fallout of relentless pressure on Black girls to help extinguish their own pain. This pain is caused by a system that refuses to change and is responsible for their suffering.

Together, these elements challenge the adultification of Black girls and the narratives that deny them the right to be heard, seen, protected, and fully experience childhood.
