Make me want to holler
The way they do my lifeSong: Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
Songwriters: Marvin Gaye, James Nyx
This work aims to express the rightful foundation for Black men’s frustration and rage. In a society where so much is censored, policed, and erased, I believe it is necessary to convey that such feelings are justified. Society as a whole prefers Black men to be docile and appear non-threatening. Society’s message to Black men is to always behave in a way that makes others feel safe, even when systemic oppression undermines their autonomy and humanity.
In this collage, the antenna symbolizes the act of sending, receiving, and communicating the voices of Black men. The collaged body captures the essence of the communicative environment to which Black men are entitled, affirming their right to express themselves.
