  • This artwork is my abstract interpretation of the Black Woman Savior trope, an erroneous ideology rooted in the racialization, control, and oppression of Black women, burdening them with society’s ills without complaint or recognition. Black women are persistently expected to show up, even when it means fighting for the interests of others while no one advocates for their own.

In this piece, the collaged image of the Black woman walks toward a dangerous situation she did not create, symbolized by the train tanker fire. The firefighters battling the blaze represent society’s tendency to react to crises rather than prevent them. The bucket she carries conveys the inadequate resources society provides, while the antenna signifies the communication between Black women and an imperfect society they are called to save, only for it to continue operating in ways that erase their humanity.
