Poster -The Irony
This collage reflects on the intertwined outcomes of the Haitian Revolution and the Louisiana Purchase. The revolution in Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti, led by enslaved Africans who overthrew French rule, created the first Black republic and proved that liberation could be claimed and sustained by the formerly enslaved. Yet that same victory pushed France to sell its entire territory of Louisiana, enabling the United States to expand westward and deepen its dependence on enslaved labor.
The gender-neutral African head placed on the body of a French soldier symbolizes a reversal of power and the rightful triumph of the Haitian people. The antenna symbolizes the act of communicating the voice of victory. The background, a collaged food label, hints at the heat and pressure that preceded the expansion of slavery across the newly acquired lands. What appears ordinary becomes a reminder of the suffering embedded in America’s growth.
The work confronts the historical irony at the heart of this moment: freedom gained in one nation became the catalyst for greater unfreedom in another, binding these histories together in a cycle of liberation and exploitation.
