Poster -The Popularity Contest
As I wove together the images and elements of this piece, I found myself reflecting on the quintessential image of the prom queen archetype. I contemplated the pervasive European standards of beauty that continue to cast a long shadow over our society. It struck me how whiteness remains the reigning prom queen, commanding an unwarranted supremacy in our cultural landscape. In this artwork, the exaggerated cartoonish portrayal of a white woman serves to reveal the absurdity inherent in the blind pursuit of popularity. Additionally, the inclusion of images associated with a diet soda brand conveys a subtle yet powerful message: that what is often presented as desirable or virtuous may not truly be good. Just as some things labeled as popular can mislead us, this juxtaposition invites a deeper examination of our perceptions and values.
