  • This artwork presents an abstract interpretation of the complex journey of Black motherhood, intricately linked with the struggle against anti-Black racism. The experience of Black mothers is unique, shaping their lives regardless of where they reside in the world.

With an unwavering desire for their children’s success, Black mothers undertake the rigorous task of protecting their children from the impact of racism while also equipping them to navigate a society rife with bigotry, discrimination, and oppression. Since the era of slavery, Black mothers have employed countless laborious and exhaustive strategies to shield their children from the harsh realities of an anti-Black society, often with mixed results. Consequently, Black children's mental and emotional well-being bears the scars of their encounters with racism and oppression.

In this artwork, the antenna symbolizes the act of sending, receiving, and amplifying the voices of Black mothers. The empty bowl in the mother’s hand signifies the denial of humanity that both she and her children endure. The bowl balanced on her head represents the immense burden and intricate balance of navigating the complex realities of motherhood within an anti-Black society. The distorted faces of her children reflect the harsh realities of prejudice and discrimination, a poignant representation of the phenomenon of adultification they face. Finally, the scenic background serves as a reminder that the beauty of humanity can be a façade. It often belies the deeper struggles lurking beneath the surface.
