  • I’m not entirely sure how I arrived at the title for this minimalistic piece. It came from sitting with the layered meanings behind the word arm. When I hear that word, I think of strength, power, and authority. I also think about its other definitions — to be equipped, to be armed, to carry weapons. Then there’s the word hammer, which brings to mind a weighted force, something that hits or pounds repeatedly.

Paired with the silhouette of a Black man’s head, those words started to take on a deeper weight. Together, the symbolism made me think about the power imbalance Black men face in America, and the most devastating outcome that brothers like Fred Hampton, Michael Jerome Stewart, and George Floyd experienced: death.

So the title evolved from that tension — the push and pull between power and the denial of power. It comes from questioning whether Black men, and Black people as a whole, are truly free.
